Sleep. It’s essential.
Without a solid slumber session – the world just doesn’t make sense the next day.
You know that feeling. Staring at the alarm clock in the middle of the night watching the minutes tick by. You just keep tossing and turning.
Turning and tossing.
Over and over.
So what should you do?
Creating the perfect bedroom sleep sanctuary is the first step toward more restful, restorative sleep – and a better tomorrow.
A little backstory for me.
Before we moved into our new house, priority number one was to make sure to invest in master bedroom upgrades and create the perfect bedroom oasis.
Nothing is more important than sleep.
I suffer from stress-induced migraines and have found lack of sleep is a trigger for me.
Creating a perfect master bedroom sleep set-up was at the top of my improvement list.
1. Invest in the Perfect Master Bedroom Mattress
The mattress might seem like an obvious place to start for an ideal master bedroom oasis – because it is!
If you haven’t purchased a quality mattress in recent years, you are well overdue.
Mattress upgrades tend to fall on the back burner of necessities.
Although we spend an average of ⅓ of our life in bed, we overlook the importance of a supportive, comfortable mattress.
There are so many different types of master bedroom mattresses to choose from.
If you’re in the market for a mattress – try an Malouf Wellsville for a better night’s sleep.
If your partner keeps you awake, this mattress will be a still, no-motion transfer dream come true.
In addition to no partner disturbance, its cool technology provides moisture-wicking and breathability like no other.
It also meets Certi-Pur US Certified for a healthier night’s sleep.

2. Select the Best New Sheets for the Perfect Master Bedroom Upgrade
Have you ever woken up during the night a drenched, sweaty mess?
Do your ill-fitting sheets pop off the corner in the middle of the night? Ever feel like the sheets are scratchy and hard?
When creating an ideal master bedroom oasis – sheets should be a high priority. I love and use Malouf Brushed Microfiber Sheet Set is an all-in-one set and comes with a flat sheet, fitted sheet, and pillowcase(s).
These sheets are double-brushed microfiber, wrinkle resistant, soft, cozy, cool, and fit a 6-18” mattress. They come in a variety of colors that I love and have a warranty for added peace of mind.
3. Upgrade to the Perfect Pillow in Your Master Bedroom
Does your neck hurt?
Do you feel like your head is too flat or too high when you try to head to slumberland?
Are you on a pancake pillow or a pillow the size of a mountain?
Have you purchased too many pillows to count and feel like none ever works?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, you need a supportive, adjustable pillow.
The Malouf Convolution Gelled Microfiber pillow features a gel-infused convoluted piece of foam (like egg crate foam) that can be removed to change the height of the pillow.
The gelled foam is cooling and can be removed to customize the pillow to your liking.
I absolutely LOVE my Malouf Convolution Gelled pillow and use it every night.
4. Customize Your Sleep With an Adjustable Base in the Master Bedroom
Ok, my husband snores.
He says I do, too (I don’t think so.)
Either way, for a happier couple – an adjustable base upgrade is key.
An adjustable base puts the sleeper in control of their individual comfort.
I purchased a dual king Malouf adjustable base for my husband and me. He sleeps one way – I sleep another. He likes his feet up and I like my head up.
The Malouf M455 Adjustable Base has stackable legs that allow you to customize the overall height of the bed based on your framework.
I love this option and keep my height low. This is perfect for my pup since she is getting up in years and struggles to get up and down on the bed.
It also has pre-set buttons that can be customized based on your preference and has an app to really personalize the adjustable base.
My favorite feature is the in-app option to listen to your sleeping which gently lifts a snoring person’s head to help reduce snoring.
5. Upgrade Your Master Bedroom Curtains to Reduce Light and Noise
Our biological clocks are set to awaken at sunrise and sleep at sunset.
In this day and age – most people can’t set their circadian clocks by the season and sun’s timetable.
I’m often burning the midnight oil and need to sleep long after the sun rises in the sky.
I’m a night person. It’s not that I can’t be a morning person – I just work better at night.
Sleeping longer than sunrise also means there are noises of neighbors I’d rather not hear.
Master bedroom upgrade idea: I invested in noise-reducing blackout curtains. I can rise and shine on my own time (well, when my sun alarm goes off – see below.)
I’m in love with Nicetown 100% Blackout Curtains Thermal, Noise Reduction, and Privacy Curtains.
Bonus – the cappuccino color is soothing and relaxing in my bedroom and a perfect bedroom upgrade idea.
6. Wake Up Refreshed in Your Master Bedroom with a Sunrise Alarm
Imagine waking to the sun slowly rising in the sky, birds chirping, and you are gently stirred from a sound sleep to start the day.
A sunrise/sunset machine allows the body to wake up naturally in the morning and fall asleep peacefully in the evening.
A perfect bedroom upgrade idea is investing in a Phillips SmartSleep machine.
The sunrise/sunset machine features a wake-up light that slowly rises based on your pre-set choices to slowly awaken you.
While the light intensifies – wake up to birds, radio, or soothing sounds – all your choice.
In the evening, sleep simulation helps prepare the body for sleep by decreasing the light.
I’ve used my Philips SmartSleep machine for many years to fall asleep faster and wake up more refreshed.
7. Grab a Sound Machine for the Master Bedroom for Better Sleep
There’s nothing more terrible than trying to fall asleep and hear the sounds of the neighborhood.
Even the most serene places occasionally are extremely loud.
Best master bedroom upgrade to help eliminate noise – enter the sound machine.
There are countless options to create white noise and reduce distracting background sounds.
I often use a White Noise machine that has a variety of choices to add just a little calming background noise for sleep.

8. Unwind Before Bed with Fabulous Master Bedroom Lighting
This one might seem obvious, but bright lights don’t get you into the fast lane on the sleep highway.
In fact, the average expert recommends putting away all electronics a while before bed to start the body’s preparation for the sleep process.
Power down your electronics and charge them with this bedside table.
Eliminate any overhead bright lights an hour before bed to prepare the body for sleep.
Upgrade your bedroom lighting with a bedside lamp to facilitate a good night’s sleep.
9. Keep Cool or Warm with a Bedjet in the Master Bedroom
Everyone has a different sleep temperature.
However, experts agree sleeping cooler will overall create better more productive sleep.
I’m from Ohio – so sleeping cool in winter is a piece of cake.
Now staying cool in summer can bring its own set of challenges.
I tried many fans, and my handy dandy floor fan has served me well until I found my new, life-changing sleep love.
When we moved into our new home, I tried the Bedjet 3 Climate Comfort. It’s seriously life-changing.
I don’t say that lightly.
It has created a cool, dry area to sleep soundly. Sleeping in summer has never been cooler.
10. Great Artwork Looks Fabulous in the Master Bedroom
It may go without saying, but loud, bright things don’t exude a calming bedroom sleep oasis. But certain colors and scents help prepare the body for sleep.
It is said that blue is the optimal color for bedrooms. When asked what the most calming color is, most people say blue.
Perhaps it’s reminiscent of the sky or the sea – either way – it provides a peaceful and serene feel.
Try adding touches of blue throughout the bedroom.
I chose a comforter with blue and accents of blue throughout my bedroom.
Pro tip: When it comes to scent – fill your room with lavender.
It’s been long known for its calming properties and has a proven ability to slow down the nervous system to facilitate sleep.
11. Sleep Better in Your Master Bedroom with a Mattress Protector
Mattress protectors are essential to keep the sleep surface clean, free of dust mites, and help reduce allergens.
Mattress protectors also protect mattress warranties as rips, stains, and tears void manufacturer defect warranties with mattresses.
Not all mattress protectors are the same quality.
Make sure to select one that protects against dust mites, allergens, is breathable, waterproof, and has a cooling agent in the fabric.
I love the Malouf 5-sided, cooling, and HD protectors. In addition to suffering from allergies, I also sleep hot.
Featuring a cooling fabric it’s both waterproof and cool at the same time.
#12: Sleep Soundly in Your Master Bedroom with the Perfect Air Purifier
Allergies affect a large portion of people.
Both my husband and I suffer from a variety of allergies.
The Holmes Air Purifier bedroom upgrade idea has been amazing for us both.
In addition to soft, white noise – it clears the air of harmful to us allergens.
I’ve had much better, restorative sleep since upgrading my air purifier.

Final thoughts
So to recap everything we covered in this post, it’s important to invest in the perfect mattress and consider upgrading to an adjustable base for added comfort and customization.
In addition, be sure to purchase accessories like sheets, pillows, and mattress protectors to further help.
Also, make sure to keep your room dark and quiet with blackout noise-reducing curtains.
In addition, sleep sounder with a sound machine and wake more refreshed with a sun alarm.
Finally, keep your room cool and consider adding an air purifier for added sleep benefits.

I’d never heard of a Sunrise alarm or Bedjet. I keep a sleep spray made with essentials oils, to spray on my pillow before bed. It helps me focus on relaxation. My husband doesn’t love the smell but he’s usually snoring by the time I get to bed 😉 xo Nipa
Hi Nipa!

Room darkening curtains was a major sleep-changer for me. I didn’t realize how sensitive I was to the random lights outside (street lights, cars, neighbors, etc). Once I changed out my curtains – everything else seemed to fall into place! Like you said 1/3 of our lives are spent sleeping. Paying attention to all these “little” things makes a huge difference!!
Hi Susan!
Yes! I love my blackout curtains. They really make such a difference in the overall sleep and noises heard in my master bedroom.

HI Fransic!
Yes! I think the mattress is the most important part to a master bedroom upgrade. It’s often a back-burner upgrade in the home – but integral to better health.

Upgrading master bedroom curtains to reduce light and noise is like reducing some of life’s distractions by turning off notifications on your phone – helping you focus on what truly matters. Great tips, thanks Debbie!
Hi Julie!
I completely agree with the tip to turn your phone off, too. I do that each night for better sleep.
