However, as much as I love a fun party… I also really love saving money just as much. The thing about throwing parties is that it is very time consuming, so the less I have to worry about spending all this money… the more motivated I am to throw a party and follow through with it. This is why I love doing Christmas Party Themes that look expensive but are actually budget friendly.
Everyone thinks you need an insane budget to throw an amazing Christmas party but the truth is you don’t and as someone who owns a catering + events business, I have seen some amazing parties thrown on a budget. Some of the wealthiest clients I have serviced know how to outsource items from Amazon, the Dollar Tree and other stores to make their events look amazing.
You would think they spend THOUSANDS on a Christmas party, but in reality they spent less than a hundred.

You can save yourself some extra money by using what you already have!
Elegant Christmas Party Themes That Look Expensive
1. Old Money Christmas Party
This theme is my personal favorite one because you can literally thrift so many things for this event. The old money Christmas theme has that timeless, cozy Christmas look that never goes out of style. You can grab inspiration for the old money theme from Tiktok. Just search videos up online and you will easily find inspiration. What I also love about the old money theme is that it photographs so well in pictures. So if you want a party that does not ALSO look good for social media purposes, then this is the theme you have to go with. Make it feel more old money by snapping pictures with the Fujifilm Instax Mini 12.
How to get the look for less: Use gold candlesticks and use inexpensive plaid ribbon around napkins or vases.
2. A Very Merry Bow Party
Bows make everything look so much prettier, especially at Christmas! This Christmas party theme is perfect if you are low on time, and don’t want to spend all the time in the world decorating. All you have to do is tie velvet or satin ribbons around glasses, candles, chairs, and even serve dishes.
Choose one ribbon color to make everything feel coordinated and detailed. I would also recommend telling your guests to wear something bow themed to the event whether that be a bow sweater, flats with bows, etc. You can make your bow party be color coordinated themed too.
How to get the look for less: To go with the theme, wrap bows around your Christmas tree. This instantly gives your tree an upgrade
3. Winter Wonderland Party
I love this theme because you find all these colors easily in any store whether that be a Dollar Tree or Target. White decorations, sparkling lights, and silver accents create a cozy, magical winter wonderland.
Use white tablecloths, inexpensive snowflake ornaments, and battery operated candles for a cute setup. One of my catering clients, Shaina, does this event every year and she loves to add in vanilla cupcake spread with white pearl sugar sprinkles. It instantly elevates the look and makes it look on theme!
How to get the look for less: To go with the theme, buy sparkling lights. The best thing about sparkling lights is you can use them for events too!
4. Black Tie & Bubbly
Do you want a fun excuse to dress up? Ask everyone to wear black, then decorate with gold/silver accents and sparkling glassware.
A simple silver/gold beverage station can become your party’s centerpiece. Because of my catering business, I know that the look of glassware is just as important here since you will be serving up some champagne. I always recommend that those hosting parties go for upgraded disposable glassware that looks like glassware but isn’t.
How to get the look for less: Shop for silver trays that you can use to decorate your table spread.

5. Christmas Movie Night
My favorite for those that are movie junkies and love a cozy and relaxing vibe. Bring out the blankets, make popcorn, and put on your favorite Christmas movies. I remember growing up my and my cousins would watch our favorites like Home Alone. It’s a Christmas classic.
A hot chocolate bar with marshmallows, whipped cream, cookies, and different syrups makes it feel extra special especially if you have little ones attending.
How to get the look for less: Give everyone a fun popcorn holder dish.
6. Gilmore Girls’ Christmas Coffeehouse Party
Transform your kitchen into a little Christmas café inspired by the Gilmore Girls. I love the Gilmore girls, and every fall and winter I feel inspired by the show.
Serve flavored coffees, pancakes, and hot chocolate. Add a handwritten drink menu for that cute coffee-shop feeling. Have everyone wear an outfit inspired by a Gilmore girls’ character.
7.Après-Ski Christmas Party
Create a cozy ski-lodge atmosphere with plaid blankets, warm drinks, and rustic decorations. Have everyone wear apres- ski outfit and consider making a bar station at home serving up cozy, boozy hot chocolate drinks.
Bonus points for a hot cocoa station!
8. Christmas Candlelight Dinner
A beautiful dinner party doesn’t need expensive decorations. You can shop for a bunch of candles from the dollar tree or some cheap, inexpensive ones from Amazon and instantly transform your home.
Use greenery, cloth napkins, and flameless candles to create a cozy, romantic atmosphere.
9. Vintage Christmas Party
Think nostalgic ornaments, classic Christmas music, old-fashioned candy, and warm lighting.
Thrift stores are perfect for finding inexpensive vintage-inspired decorations. Make it more nostalgic by encouraging your guests to wear vintage Christmas sweaters. One fun idea is to make it vintage by choosing a specific time frame like a “1960s’ Vintage Xmas Party.”
